Coding Specialist (Remote - US)

The Coding Specialist plays a vital role in ensuring accurate, compliant, and high-quality coding of outpatient facility services. This role involves applying ICD-10-CM, CPT, and other coding standards to medical records while collaborating with clinical teams to optimize documentation and reimbursement. You will contribute to regulatory reporting, quality improvement initiatives, and research activities by abstracting and coding medical data accurately. The position combines remote and occasional on-site work, offering a flexible environment for focused, impactful work. Ideal candidates are detail-oriented, analytical, and skilled at working with healthcare professionals to maintain compliance and drive clinical excellence.

Accountabilities

·        Apply official coding guidelines (ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS) accurately to outpatient facility services, including modifiers and documentation requirements.

·        Maintain high coding accuracy while meeting departmental productivity standards.

·        Abstract clinical information from medical records to support reimbursement, physician documentation improvement, research, and regulatory reporting.

·        Collaborate with clinical staff and participate in team discussions to provide input and enhance processes.

·        Support audit, compliance, and quality initiatives through precise and consistent coding.

Requirements

·        High school diploma or equivalent; Bachelor’s degree in Health Informatics, Health Information Management, or related field preferred.

·        Certification required: RHIT, CCS, CPC, COC, or CCS-P.

·        Minimum 2 years of outpatient facility coding experience (ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, and facility coding modifiers).

·        Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, EMR/EHR systems, and insurance plans including LCD/NCDs.

·        Experience collaborating with clinical professionals in a healthcare environment.

·        Preferred experience: oncology or transplant coding, E&M, surgical, and infusion coding, dual/double coding, training clinicians, and familiarity with EPIC HB, 3M Encoder ORCA, or Mindscape.
