This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Medical Coder (Outpatient) based in United States.

This fully remote role supports Veterans Affairs medical centers across Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina.
You will code a high volume of outpatient encounters, including clinic visits, ancillary services, diagnostic testing, and outpatient surgery.
The position plays a direct role in ensuring accurate, compliant, and timely medical coding for veteran healthcare services.
You will work extensively with ICD-10-CM, CPT-4, HCPCS Level II, E/M guidelines, NCCI edits, and coding modifiers.
The role requires careful review of clinical documentation and the ability to determine whether encounters are accurately coded and billable.
You will work with VA electronic health record systems while maintaining rigorous accuracy and confidentiality standards.
The initial engagement is 12 months, with the potential for four additional 12-month option periods.

Accountabilities
  • Code outpatient encounters across clinic visits, urgent care, radiology, laboratory services, other ancillary services, and outpatient surgery using ICD-10-CM, CPT-4, and HCPCS Level II.

  • Assign appropriate E/M levels in accordance with current E/M guidelines, CPT Assistant, and Coding Clinic guidance.

  • Apply NCCI bundling edits and use appropriate modifiers, including modifiers such as 25, 59, and 91, when documentation supports their use.

  • Review multiple CPT codes to determine whether services are components of a larger procedure represented by a single code.

  • Assign appropriate ICD-10 diagnoses to ancillary and diagnostic services based on the reason the test or service was ordered.

  • Review clinical documentation in CPRS and enter coding and related data into the VistA Patient Care Encounter (PCE) package using the approved encoder.

  • Determine whether encounters are billable and identify duplicate encounters, records created in error, or documentation that does not adequately support assigned codes.

  • Re-review coded records when they are questioned before billing or following a claim denial and make appropriate corrections when necessary.

  • Maintain a minimum 95% coding accuracy while meeting facility-specific turnaround requirements.

  • Protect patient information and follow applicable confidentiality, ethical coding, and federal healthcare requirements.

Requirements

  • Hold an active CPC, CCS, CCS-P, RHIT, RHIA, or CPC-H credential.

  • Have at least 2 years of recent outpatient coding experience, including E/M services, ancillary services, and outpatient procedures.

  • Complete an accredited coding, Health Information Management, or Health Information Technician program.

  • Have formal training in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and reimbursement methodologies.

  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of CPT, HCPCS, NCCI edits, and coding modifiers.

  • Be proficient with an industry-standard medical coding encoder.

  • Be a U.S. citizen and able to successfully complete a federal background investigation, including NACI and fingerprinting.

  • Maintain a private, secure home workspace with reliable high-speed internet suitable for handling confidential healthcare information.

  • Experience with VA systems such as VistA, CPRS, PCE, and Integrated Billing is preferred.

  • Experience coding outpatient or ambulatory surgery, as well as hospital-based radiology or laboratory services, is highly desirable.

  • Complete required annual VA Privacy and Information Security Awareness and HIPAA training, including TMS 10176 and 10203.

  • Follow AHIMA Standards of Ethical Coding and applicable VA confidentiality requirements.

Benefits

  • $25.00–$30.00 per hour.

  • 100% remote position available to candidates in the United States.

  • Initial 12-month term, with four potential additional 12-month option periods.

  • Opportunity to support VA medical centers across Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina.

  • Mission-driven work supporting healthcare services for U.S. veterans.

  • Company-provided laptop, coding encoder, and reference materials.

  • Opportunity to work with federal healthcare systems and large-scale outpatient coding operations.

  • Exposure to VA-specific coding workflows, electronic health records, and healthcare reimbursement processes.
